Make yourself at home at Calivino

With so many wine bars and wine pubs popping up all over the place, how does Calivino distinguish itself from the rest? Once you step inside, you will find the answer.

Owner, Daniel Bradley, created Calivino with one word in mind – Eclectic. The unique concept combines the best elements from all systems into one, offering novice tasters wine and food experiences that are usually reserved for professional palates.

The living room like interior is designed to give patrons a place to unwind, relax and socialize after a hard day of work. It is right next to Angel Stadium and a perfect place to have a pre-game meal or post-game gathering.  Calivino is all about fresh and new. The craft beers and fine wines rotate frequently, thus reasons why there is no wine menu. However, if you need recommendations on what to pair with your food, just ask. Owner Daniel (pictured below) made great suggestions to Allen and me.

Calivino is proud of its menu by sourcing the freshest ingredients locally. Organic produce and humanely raised meat are used in the kitchen and you will never find frozen french fries or burger patties here. Even some of the herbs and vegetables com from their own home gardens. Now how’s that for FRESH?

We started our evening with Bacon Dates (goat cheese, honey). I fell in love with these at a tasting few years ago and even served them at my own wedding. Calivino added the honey for a little special sweetness. We have seen Pork Belly Sliders (spicy aioli, pickled shallot, crispy onion) a lot lately. These were thick, lightly crispy and plenty flavorful. The combination of a little spiciness, slight tanginess and crunchy onion went so well together. This is a must try. In case you haven’t noticed, I have to have salad in almost every meal except breakfast. I absolutely adored this Autumn Salad (spinach, danish blue, green apple, dried cranberries). It was light and refreshing. You can add chicken to it if you want to. The Duck Pot Pie (duck confit, aromatics, puff pastry) was a surprise. It reminded me more of a Biscuit and Gravy. The puff pastry was very light and flaky while the duck stew was very creamy and hearty. There was a lot of duck meat in it. The House Burger (chuck/brisket, fried onions, onion jam, havarti) got 4 thumbs up from us; bold and juicy with fresh french fries. We finished the meal with Beignets (lemon creme anglaise). These were a little denser than others I’ve had. The lemon creme anglaise with the sweet cinnamon sugar was delightful.

If you have not visited Calivino yet, stop by to say ‘Hi’ to Daniel. Although it was my first time meeting him, after a short conversation, I felt like I’ve known him for years! His friendly smile really makes you feel welcome like you are just at a friend’s house having a great conversation. Allen and I looking forward to visiting again soon. Perhaps we’ll see you there.
