Pei Wei Asian Diner @ Brea – Media Tasting

It’s not often I go to  a Chinese Restaurant.  Why?  Because I cook a pretty descent Chinese meal and my family likes it better.  Very often when we had gone in the past, they’d say ‘You cook better than this’.  Maybe they just want me to slave over the stove, I don’t know.  😉

I had reservation about Pei Wei to be honest.  Although its set up is fast food style, all food are cook-to-order.  Now that I like.  Even more exciting was the fact that it unveiled new look and menu items in 2 of its locations on June 4, 2013; one at Brea, the other at Laguna Niguel.  I jumped on the opportunity to try Brea since it is fairly close to me.

I was really impressed with the interior.  It’s modern and chic with dark wood furnishing and faux brick wall.  I especially love the open kitchen!

The new menu additions offer lighter and brighter items in time for the summer but also continues to serve popular hearty entrees.  New side additions like Zesty Ginger Orange Edamame and Spicy Szechuan Green Beans pair well with any of the lettuce wraps or as well as old favorite entrees.

We started our meal with the ever popular Pork Egg Rolls (Pork, Napa cabbage, black mushrooms, carrots, scallions, rolled in a crispy egg roll wrapper).  Unlike most fast food egg rolls that you would mostly taste vegetables, these were filled with real pork.  The hot mustard dipping sauce was great!

I was surprised at how flavorful the Thai Chicken Lettuce Wrap (Citrus soy sauce, red onions, red bell peppers, scallions, cilantro, mint, iceberg lettuce) was!  The lettuce wedge/cup was fresh and crispy.  I highly recommend this dish either as an appetizer or even as a main dish.  I would definitely order this when I visit again.  So yummy!

Entree # 1 was Spicy Korean Steak (Hot pepper sauce, garlic, white mushrooms, onions, carrots, long beans, toasted sesame seeds).  The first few bites, there was barely any heat. It slowly built up but was still pretty mild.  If you like stronger taste dish, this will please you.  We decided to also add on Fried Rice and it was totally worth the 99 cents.  If you like fried rice, definitely get it.

Entree #2 was Pei Wei Spicy Vegetables & Tofu (Chile vinegar sauce, scallions, garlic, snap peas, carrots).  I was surprised to see hard Bean Curb instead of Fried Tofu but it was good. The vegetables were fresh and snappy.  Again the heat was very mild and sauce was on a sweeter side.  We ordered noodle instead of rice.  I was pleased that they used lo-mein instead of egg noodle.

Entree #3 was Sesame Chicken (Soy citrus glaze, red bell peppers, onions, scallions, ginger, garlic, chile paste, toasted sesame seeds).  White chicken breast was used and they were lightly breaded and tender.  I think a lot of people would like this dish.  I really appreciated how pretty all the dishes were presented.

I love the new fountain drink dispenser machines!  You push the bottom to choose your drink and it dispenses.  They are such space savers and a lot less messy!  At the self serve station, you can get fortune cookies and to go boxes for your left overs.  They even give you cups for you to take drinks for the road.  Did I mention how friendly all the staff were?  Super nice people work here!

Pei Wei has generously offered a $25 gift card to one of my lucky readers to enjoy the delicious food.  To enter to win:

Entry period ends on Saturday, June 29, 2013.  Winner will be announced on Sunday, June 30, 2013.  Good luck!
