{"id":39,"date":"2011-08-26T06:36:33","date_gmt":"2011-08-26T06:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/?p=39"},"modified":"2017-05-22T11:31:45","modified_gmt":"2017-05-22T18:31:45","slug":"costa-mesa-restaurant-week-2011-mastros-steakhouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/?p=39","title":{"rendered":"Costa Mesa Restaurant Week 2011 &#8211; Mastro&#8217;s Steakhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of all the restaurants participating in Costa Mesa Restaurant Week, I was most excited about Mastro&#8217;s Steakhouse.\u00a0 Many of my Yelp friends have yelp&#8217;ed about it.\u00a0 With a rating of 4 1\/2 stars among over 700 reviews, I was sure it was going to be a feast of its kind.\u00a0 When we drove up to the restaurant, we realized it was valet only.\u00a0 Not that I am cheap, but I really don&#8217;t like valet parking.\u00a0 Have heard too many horror stories and just hate the way they drive your car like a race car. It&#8217;s a parking lot, guys, not a race track!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages1_a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-41\" title=\"Collages1_a\" src=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages1_a-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages1_a-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages1_a-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages1_a-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>We were about 15 minutes early for our reservation.\u00a0 But I guess early is better than late.\u00a0 We walked past a hall way with 2 huge wine cases on both sides.\u00a0 (I don&#8217;t know if this is what they are called.)\u00a0 We were seated with no problems.\u00a0 Our server was extremely cordial from the very beginning.\u00a0 Right away you feel the &#8216;fine dinning&#8217; treatment.\u00a0 And what&#8217;s fine dining without fine wine, right?\u00a0 The wine menu was a hefty book which we couldn&#8217;t make use of.\u00a0 However, our server did convince Allen to have the Cosmo Martini.\u00a0 The server poured it over dry ice and it bubbled.\u00a0 Quite an interesting sight.\u00a0 I took a sip (fine 2 sips), and it was strong.\u00a0 But it was probably the best I&#8217;ve ever sipped.\u00a0 Keep in mind, I don&#8217;t drink and normally don&#8217;t like alcoholic drinks.\u00a0 It tasted really &#8216;clean and crisp&#8217; to me.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if this is the &#8216;right&#8217; description of a Martini, but that was how I thought it tasted like.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG_a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-42\" title=\"JPEG_a\" src=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG_a-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG_a-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG_a-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG_a-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>We didn&#8217;t bother with the regular menu because we were here specifically for the Restaurant Week menu.\u00a0 For starters, I chose French Onion Soup and Allen chose the Caesar Salad.\u00a0 I normally don&#8217;t care for French Onion Soup but this one was really good.\u00a0 The salad was pretty typical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG2_a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44\" title=\"Mastros-2999a\" src=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-2999a-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-2999a-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-2999a-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-2999a-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43\" title=\"JPEG2_a\" src=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG2_a-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG2_a-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG2_a-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG2_a-375x300.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>For the entree, I chose Atlantic Salmon with Saut\u00e9ed Broccoli and Scalloped Potatoes.\u00a0 First I was surprised when my plate was bought over, it only had the salmon by itself.\u00a0 I soon realized all the sides were served &#8216;family style&#8217;, meaning to be shared.\u00a0 While the concept is good, it&#8217;s better suited for a &#8216;family restaurant&#8217;.\u00a0 Here, it greatly sacrificed the presentation of the entree, which I thought was a big part of a fine dining experience.<\/p>\n<p>My salmon was blackened but it didn&#8217;t have any spiciness to it.\u00a0 I was used to &#8216;Cajun&#8217; style blacken!\u00a0 I also thought it was overcooked and dry.\u00a0 It was not a big piece and I left 1 \/3 of it uneaten.\u00a0 The scalloped potatoes were very average as was the broccoli.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-3017a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-45\" title=\"Mastros-3017a\" src=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-3017a-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-3017a-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-3017a-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Mastros-3017a-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Allen&#8217;s Entree was 10 oz. New York Strip with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Corn.\u00a0 The New York Strip was excellent!\u00a0 However, the Garlic Mashed Potatoes didn&#8217;t taste garlicky and the Creamed Corn was obviously made with canned corn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG3a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-47\" title=\"JPEG3a\" src=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG3a-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG3a-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG3a-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/JPEG3a-375x300.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>When I told our server I thought my salmon was over cooked, he said he&#8217;d talk to his manager.\u00a0 I told him not to bother.\u00a0 I really think if I don&#8217;t like my food, it&#8217;s just my taste.\u00a0 Others might like it fine.\u00a0 He then offered to give us an additional dessert free, their famous Butter Cake.\u00a0 We were already getting the Cheese Cake and Flourless Chocolate Espresso Cake.\u00a0 Allen thoroughly enjoyed the butter cake and cheese cake.\u00a0 The flourless chocolate espresso cake paled compared to the one we had at Capital Grille.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages_a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-40\" title=\"Collages_a\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages_a-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages_a-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wendyfulworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Collages_a-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>I had very high hope for Mastro&#8217;s.\u00a0 Maybe that was why I was so disappointed.\u00a0 Of the 5 restaurants we&#8217;ve tried so far, this was the most expensive, but I&#8217;m sad to say it was also the least delectable!<\/p>\n<p>Mastro&#8217;s
