I haven’t been to too many Malaysian restaurants because, frankly, there aren’t that many around OC. When I first heard of Roti Mama, I was part curious and part excited.
Roti Mama is a small family run restaurant. It may be a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant but people who run it have big hearts and the food is equally bold. Every dish is made with spices made by Mama herself. You will not find any store bought jar spice in the kitchen. Even the Sambal (chili) sauce is made in house. Allen and I tried quite a few dishes; all of them flavorful and nicely prepared.
Roti Chanai is homemade hand-tossed and served with curry sauce. Want some meat with it? Try the Roti Beef Murtaback which is stuffed with beef and onion. Masak Lemak Chili Padi/Yellow Sauce (spicy turmeric sauce and coconut milk) with Tiger Prawn. While most dishes taste like a cross between Indian and Thai cuisine, this dish is most similar to a Thai curry dish, probably because of the coconut milk which I love. Kerutuk Sauce is the ‘Meat and Potato’ dish, simmered in fennel, star anise, cumming spices and potato. Order it with beef or chicken.Mee Goren is Mama’s specialty stir-fry yellow egg noodle.
Char Kway Teo is my childhood favorite – Stir fry flat rice noodle, egg, bean sprouts, chives. Don’t miss the Fried Bananas and specialty drinks like Mama Teh Tark Milk (hot or cold) and Ais Kachang (A concoction of red beans, corn, rose syrup, grass jelly, sweetened milk). I had it as shaved ice because I love shaved ice!
Service is very warm and friendly. This is a neighborhood small eatery that deserves your support. So stop by to say ‘Hi’ to Mama and let me know how you like it.
